Wrap Up - BCPBL and 2009 MLB Draft

A record 14 current BCPBL and BCPBL alumni were selected in the 2009 MLB First Year Players Draft. [See BCPBL Players Drafted 1995-2009] This is testament of the strength and calibre of the league. Congratulations to all players drafted, coaches and parents!

Draft notes:
* For the third year in a row a BCPBL player/alumni was selected in the 1st round. (2009 - James Paxton, 2008 - Brett Lawrie, 2007 - Kyle Lotzkar)
* LHP James Paxton was the highest drafted Canadian player ever by the Toronto Blue Jays in their 33 year club history. James went 37th pick overall.
* Langley Blaze had five players from their current BCPBL roster drafted and one alumni Jon Hesketh
* LHP Jon Hesketh (Langley Blaze grad) was drafted for the 3rd time and will be signing with  the Seattle Mariners soon and begin his professional baseball career
* 5th round pick SS Wes Darvill (Langley Blaze) was signed by the Chicago Cubs on June 12th. Wes will play for the Canadian Junior National Team in Cuba and Carolina and then join the Cubs Arizona Rookie team in early July.
* The province of British Columbia led Canada in number of players drafted, 15 out of a total of 40 Canadians
* Two players from the CCBC were drafted; LHP Jay Johnson (Prairie Baseball Academy Dawgs) selected by Baltimore Orioles in the 25th round and SS Kyle Dhanani (Thompson Rivers University) by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 43rd round. Dhanani immediately signed with the Brewers and will head for their rookie team in Helena, Montana.

34th Round - RHP David Kington (Coquitlam Reds grad) selected by St.Louis Cardinals
39th Round - PHP Paul Barton (Parksville Royals) selected by the Cincinnati Reds
