The North Shore Twins Baseball program produces not only top quality baseball players but also respected individuals by instilling the principles of sportsmanship, teamwork, honesty, and work ethic. The Twins program also places a high priority on academics and emphasizes that school performance is a critical component in the success of each player’s development.
The 2013 version of the North Shore Junior Twins has a healthy mix of returning players and some youth to push for starting positions. 15 of the 17 players on this year’s roster have played through the Twins system at one point or another before this year, either with the prep team or junior fall ball program.
The Twins expect to be a team that will rely on a deep pitching staff, strong defense and an ability to hit situationally. Being the junior premier team there is a focus on development so all players will be dual guys seeing time at a position and getting the chance to contribute on the mound. Anchoring the pitching rotation will be returnees Braeden Toikka, Matteo Vincelli & Will McAffer. Toikka will captain the OF from center while not pitching, Vincelli will see time in the infield and McAffer will see innings in the OF as well to get his bat in the lineup. Robert Hemer and Trevor Henits will both be relied upon to log big innings throughout the season. Hemer is also an infielder and Henits will compete with the first basemen. Jeremy Fish starts the season on the DL and the coaching staff is excited about adding his arm to the pitching staff and his speed to the OF sometime in late May or early June. The Twins are lucky to have 4 LHP’s on this year’s squad. In addition to Toikka & Henits, the Twins will use Trevor Fonseca for lefty lefty matchups and Max Williams will see time in the rotation. Both lefties will also play the OF and Williams will see time at one bag. Ryan Fonseca and Noah Ritchie cap off the pitchers that will see regular time on the mound and both of them are also versatile infielders.
Leading the pitching staff through the year will be a solid group of catchers including returning backstop Manny Restrepo and prep Twins graduates Matty Reyes and Mac Sharpe. Sharpe will double as an outfielder and Reyes and Restrepo are utility guys who have the ability to contribute to the team however necessary. Alex Owen, also a returning junior Twin, and Kobe Pallan will compete at first base and Owen will see time in the OF. Taylor Wright will contribute mainly as an infielder, he is a true table setter in the hitting lineup and may just get the odd opportunity to strut his stuff on the bump as well. Minjae Kim adds depth to the outfield and has shown that he can contribute with key hits.
The coaching staff this year is excited to have a group of young ballplayers that are keen on being students of the game. Dave Speers as GM provides support to a solid group of baseball guys to continue to the winning tradition that he has instilled in the past. Parker Kynoch is back for his 3rd year as Head Coach. Steven Roller is the boss of the bullpen for the 3rd year in a row. Sean O’Neill is in his 2nd year with the program and will work mainly with the outfielders and contribute to the hitting and base running game. Mike Wilson rounds out the coaching staff with an all-round knowledge of the game and will head up the team’s conditioning. |

Starting on the week of Labour Day, the Twins will again run Fall Ball seasons for all three of our programs. Starting in early September, seasons typically end around Thanksgiving or when the weather turns bad. Fall Ball is a relatively light combination of practices, games and tournaments in the lower mainland and in some cases the Island, against other leagues and other PBL clubs. It represents the beginning of our 2013 calendar and is an important part of our baseball year. Fall Ball is part of the formal Try-Out period for the 2013 Spring teams. For players wishing to play regular season Spring baseball in 2013 with either the Preps, Junior or Premiers, Fall Ball is critical. Fall Ball, is followed by indoor winter skills and conditioning. (Start dates, costs and location for these off-season sessions will be announced shortly)
All players are welcome for Fall Ball. As the eligibility of Junior and Premier players is bound by territories defined by the BCPBL, it is important that your place of residence falls within the Twins territory or you have a release from the team in whose territory you live. The Twins home territory is everything north of the Burrard Inlet including North Vancouver, District of North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Squamish, the Sunshine Coast and Bowen Island. The Twins share (with the Cannons) small parts of Burnaby and Vancouver south of the 2nd Narrows Bridge which is as follows: Sperling Avenue on the east, Lougheed Highway and East Broadway on the south and Nanaimo Street on the west. If there are any uncertainties, leave a message on the Hotline and we will address your question.

The 2012 North Shore Junior Twins, like every team at this time of year, are very optimistic about the upcoming season. Coming off of another final four finish at the BCJPBL Championships, the Twins have 9 players returning for another shot at it. Dylan Thorp will be counted on to lead the pitching staff with his rubber left arm and will also compete with the outfielders for some at bats. Griffy Goyer & Braeden Fitzpatrick will also be back to eat up innings and Fitz will see time at one bag while Goyer is expected to be the leader of a talented outfield. Josh Grant is a true utility player and the club will take advantage of his versatility and his reliable bat. Returning infielders Anthony Cusati and Emerson Dohm have developed some unique chemistry and will likely be found in the middle of both the Twins batting order and the infield. Trevor Wiersma is back for another year behind the dish and scrapping it out on the right side of the infield. Daniel Curalli will also see time as a backstop and in addition will patrol the outfield. Alex Owen will be another versatile player being fit to play 1st, the outfield and potentially eat up innings here and there on the mound. The 16U Twins welcome all their new additions highlighted by some live arms expected to earn starts on the mound. Keenan Williams will see time on the mound as well as the outfield. Ryan Matsuda will also be a dual guy adding depth to the infield and the starting pitching staff. Will McAffer & Matteo Vincelli, who spent last year with the 14U Twins, will both compete for jobs in the infield and on the bump. Braeden Toikka, another Twins prep player moving up, adds a crafty left arm to the staff and will track down balls in the outfield when called upon. Last year’s Bantam AAA provincial finalist teammates Matty Woo & Manny Restrepo will contribute depth to the pitching staff and Matty will play the OF while Manny will contribute behind the dish. Brayden Rysstad adds a big bat to the order as a corner infielder and last but not least Geoff Ehresman is expected to see innings on the mound and in the outfield while adding speed to the team’s lineup.
The coaching staff for the Twins this year is excited to work with a group that has developed some good chemistry working hard together and competing against one another for the last 7 months leading up to the start of their season. GM Dave Speers is happy to have a tight knit bunch of baseball guys to help develop players on & off the field and teach them how to win. Parker Kynoch along with Steve Roller & Ryan Connolly are back for another year. In addition the Twins have added a nice combination of experience & youth from Al Vyner and Sean O’Neill.

The North Shore Junior Twins 2011 Fall Ball season is well underway, and the club split into two squads this past weekend for a tournament in Sumas, WA. Saturday went well, lead by the positive energy of John Haar, and finished with the Twins RED team knocking off the Twins Black team 8-3 fueled by a big 7-run 5th inning. Both teams picked up wins on Sunday and did it in different fashion. Team Black put their leadoff man on base in 5 out of the 7 innings and racked up 5 two out runs on offence. Andrew Callegari battled hard on the mound and when all was said and done, picked up the W after Will McAffer drove in the winning run (by mercy rule) in the bottom of the 6th to win 16-9. Twins Red played solid defence behind a complete game gem by Alex Debelle and got some timely hits en route to a 4-2 win which secured them a spot in the tournament Championship game. Unfortunately a storm blew in during the championship game while both Twins teams were in action. Twins Black was tied 3-3 with the Cannons in the third inning with Matt D'Avignon on the mound and Alex Owen got the start for Twins Red in the final and handed the ball over to Josh Grant in the 3rd trailing 2-1 to the D Sports Richins. Next weekend the Twins will compete as a complete group in the Laces Fall Classic in Everett. After that they will wrap up the fall ball season with a couple practices mixed in with the Junior Twins World Series at Parkgate. |

The Jr Twins went into the annual Langley Jr Blaze tournament playing some good baseball despite a tough nine-inning loss to North Delta on Wednesday night. Friday night's first game was an offensive explosion for the Jr Twins who were matched up against the Mid Valley Saints (Midget AAA). The game ended in five innings, with the Twins ahead 15-0. In the second game, the Jr Twins faced a mix of grade 10 & 11 Sr Blaze players; over-matched, the Jr Twins lost 9-0. In the third game of the weekend, the Jr Twins had a rematch with the Mid Valley Saints. This one was much closer: 3-2 final. Trailing 2-1 late in the game the Twins got a clutch two-RBI double by Alex Owen to take the lead, and they held on for the victory. Monday's semi-final brought the Twins back to McLeod Park to host the Kamloops Riverdogs (Midget AAA). A single run in the bottom of the first was all the Twins needed in this 1 hour and 13 minutes beauty. Clark Grisbrook was on the mound for a dominant, complete game shut-out. Moving onto the final, the Jr Twins would face the Langley Jr Blaze. With strong pitching and the best offense in the league, the Jr Blaze had dominated the Jr Twins so far this year in league play. The Jr Twins got out to a quick start and scored 4 in the top of the first, only to see Langley bounce right back with 3 in the bottom half. The teams traded runs for most of the rest of the game. In the seventh, the Jr Twins were ahead 6-5 and scored an all important run to go ahead by two. Langley did not give up going into the bottom of seven. After a quick out Langley managed to get the bases loaded. Riley Macdonald, who relieved Braeden Fitzpatrick (threw 6 innings), got the Blaze to hit into a game-ending double play, and sealed the 7-5 victory and the championship for the Jr Twins. The weekend was a great showing by all the Jr Twins in all three aspects of their game. They had quality pitching, great defence and a balanced offensive attack!! |

The North Shore Jr Twins are an elite program designed to provide dedicated young players (14-16 years of age) an opportunity to achieve their baseball related goals, and an opportunity to compete at the highest level possible. In 2011, the Jr Twins will look to build off a strong second half in 2010 which saw them reach the BCJPBL Final 4 once again. With 7 returning players along with several nice additions from our U14 Prep team, the Jr Twins look to be strong within the BCJPBL again this year. Returning players include: RHP Erik Brownell who lead the team and league in appearances on the mound; Clark Grisbrook who will be counted on for many quality starts, and who will likely see some innings with the Sr. Twins at some point this year; Riley MacDonald who brings solid leadership qualities to this team, including behind the dish. Mitch Grisbrook is a versatile player that will see time behind the dish, in the outfield as well as time in the infield. Chris Kuno is making the transition to pitcher and has had some success with this throughout the fall and winter. Chris will be counted on to log some key innings. Up the middle, Tristan Graham returns after a great rookie season and will be looked upon to once again anchor a strong infield. Finally, George Upton will see the majority of his time in the outfield. He brings strong defense and a contagious work ethic which is needed over a long season. New players include: 2010 Bantam AAA Provincial Team member Robbey Panico. Panico provides a big bat and base speed to our line-up. He will spend time at 3rd base and in the outfield. Alex Owen is coming to the Jr Twins from Coquitlam LL. Alex has a great work ethic and will be a nice addition to the team. Dallas Colpitts is yet another Gibsons player making the big travel commitment to play for the Twins. Dallas will see some time on the mound for us as well as in the outfield. First Year Jr Twins include: Griff Goyer who will see a lot of work this year as the anchor to our outfield, as well as one of the “go to” arms on the mound. Anthony Cusati has a big upside and will see time in the middle infield as well as being another key pitcher for this rotation. Emerson Dohm and Josh Grant will see time in the middle infield, while Rodney Gilbert and Braeden Fitzpatrick will see time at the corner infield positions as well as innings on the mound. Dylan Thorp is our only LHP. So undoubtedly teams will see a lot of Thorp in the lefty/lefty match-ups. Trevor Wiersma rounds out the Jr Twins roster at the catcher position. Trevor will benefit greatly from having two key guys in MacDonald and M. Grisbrook to work with while he learns the most difficult position in the game. Daniel Currali has also joined our team as a non roster player, but will see time for the Jr Twins in exhibition games and tournaments. Daniel will be able to help the team on the mound, behind the plate, and in the outfield. The 2011 coaching staff has many new faces. Parker Kynoch is taking on the Head Coach role and brings solid experience by playing the game at a high level including playing for Team Saskatchewan, and later Douglas College. Parker is an excellent teacher, communicator and demands 100% effort level and player accountability from his players. Assisting Kynoch will be two former Twins: Ryan Connolly and Matt Council. Connolly and Council both played for Canadian Baseball Hall of Famer John Haar; and consequently they will both be great additions to this coaching staff. Connolly will work mainly with the infielders and hitters, while Council will work with the outfielders. Steven Roller will be the pitching coach and will manage pitching routines and bullpens over the course of the year. In addition, the Jr Twins are lucky to have added Mike Wilson as a guest coach this year. Mike brings an accomplished coaching career to the Twins, as well as a top notch fitness/conditioning program that will allow us to compete with added strength, flexibility and endurance this year. Join us at Parkgate or around the league for some exciting Twins baseball in 2011!! Our Home Opener is April Wednesday April 20 at 6:30pm. Submitted by: Dave Speers, General Manager-North Shore Jr. Twins (16U). |
